Ayurveda
Ayurveda, is a traditional form of Indian medicine that was developed during the Vedic Ages (c. 1500 – c. 500 BCE) in India. Like traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda also has similar origins which, over the span of 5000 years, have developed into a complex medicinal system. Vedic culture was essentially based on the Four Books of Knowledge (The Vedas) which reflect traditional Indian philosophies and schools of thought.
The word ‘Ayurveda’ stems from two words ‘Ayur’ (life) and ‘Veda’ (knowledge) and is a branch of knowledge related to the physical and mental well being of humans. Ancient physicians segmented the universe into different types of manifested energy, based on these schools of thought, and attributed the very same energy to food and herbs.
According to Ayurveda, ailments are a result of imbalance of energies in the human body and therapies primarily focus on harmonising this imbalance of body, mind and the environment.
While recovery of patients depends on the ailment being treated, patients are sure to experience improvements within 10-15 days after starting their treatment. Sometimes, this might even be sooner. It is advised that the complete course be adhered to so that the disease/ailment is properly treated and medication can have it’s full effect.
A sub-branch of Ayurveda is, Abhyanga – an Ayurvedic oil massage therapy for healing and detoxing both mind and body. The oil used in Abhyanga is pre-medicated with herbs to treat specific conditions and if often prescribed for joint health and bring your core energies back in balance.
